Smart Woman Securities (SWS) is a 501-c-3, not for profit organization whose mission is to educate undergraduate women on finance and investments. Through educational seminars, mentoring initiatives and exposure to successful professionals and businesses, SWS provides the guidance and resources upon which women can build greater knowledge of the financial industry.
SWS was founded in 2006 by two Harvard graduates, Tracy Britt and Teresa Hsiao. These two women were discouraged by the lack of female representation in undergraduate finance clubs. They created SWS as a place for women to learn introductory financial information and develop a community of empowerment.
Education
Smart Woman Securities participates and sponsors a variety of education events throughout the school year. In the fall semester, our 10-week stock pitch seminar series educates members on the basics of developing a stock pitch thesis as well as valuing a company. Guest lecturers including Isenberg professors and industry professionals provide insights into the various career paths that can be pursued with a degree in finance.
Mentorship
Each semester, Smart Woman Securities members are paired with Isenberg upperclassmen, recent graduates and industry professionals in our mentor match-up program. Members are encouraged to participate in weekly calls with their mentors to learn about opportunities at UMass and beyond. This program places a heavy emphasis on early networking and professional development.
Community
Outside of weekly meetings and guest speakers, Smart Woman Securities sponsors two networking trips to Boston and New York City. Some of the past companies visited include Fidelity Investments, UBS, Loomis Sayles, State Street Corporation, Citi Group, Scotiabank, J.P. Morgan and more! Visiting these companies allows members to get to know each other and potential companies for internships and career opportunities.
