Did you have any initial career goals when you entered Isenberg? Were there any key moments or influences (a guest speaker, course, or extracurricular) during your time at Isenberg that changed or confirmed your career goals?
My initial career goal was to become a sports agent. When I first decided to pursue a career in the sports industry, I was unaware of the many facets of the business. However, through coursework and classes at Isenberg and the Mark H. McCormick Department of Sports Management, I gained a broader understanding of the various opportunities in the sports world. This expanded knowledge ultimately led me to shift my career goals entirely.
Can you share a favorite work assignment that could help a student understand more about what you do?
One of my favorite work assignments to date has been leading the partnership strategy for selling the Minnesota Wild’s naming rights. I was responsible for crafting a compelling narrative that highlighted the Wild’s significance in “the state of hockey,” its role in the St. Paul community, and the arena’s transformation plans. This narrative aims to demonstrate how naming the facility would offer a valuable platform for the right brand.
Now that you’re in this position, what aspects have surprised you that you didn’t anticipate before starting?
Now, in my partnership strategy and consulting role, I’m surprised by how quickly and significantly this niche within the industry has grown. While stories have always been important to brands and properties, I hadn’t anticipated the extent to which sports organizations and beyond would invest in entire teams dedicated solely to crafting narratives that drive sales.
What inspires you about the work you are doing in your industry?
What inspires me most about my current work in the industry is the creativity across sports and entertainment enabled by the power of brands. It’s a blessing to have a job that challenges me to think beyond the conventional and create something truly remarkable.
What are some daily challenges you experience in your role?
The daily challenges I face in my role are likely similar to those in many occupations and industries. Maintaining consistent communication and alignment under tight deadlines can be difficult, but as my role and our team have evolved, we’ve developed systems that significantly alleviate these issues.
Is there anything you wish you had done differently while a student at Isenberg?
I don’t believe there’s anything I would have done differently. As a former student-athlete, I made the most of the time I had to connect with professors and industry professionals, and I actively developed relationships with my peers through club involvement. I would advise any incoming student to prioritize these connections while at Isenberg.
Networking is extremely important but can be intimidating to undergraduates. What tips do you have for getting started engaging with alum or upperclassmen?
The best advice I can give an undergraduate about networking is to stay curious. Keep up with your industry and be prepared with topics of interest to spark engaging conversations. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice! Young alumni and upperclassmen can relate to your current experiences and often enjoy giving back by helping you navigate your path, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
