Description of Company: A Fortune 100 Company. The leading off price retailer of apparel and home fashion in the US and worldwide.

Did you have any initial career goals when you entered Isenberg? Were there any key moments or influences (a guest speaker, course, or extracurricular) during your time at Isenberg that changed or confirmed your career goals?

Entering Isenberg, my initial career goal was to find a career in a strong performing retail company that would provide me many opportunities for future growth and promotions. I knew I always had a passion to work in retail, specifically in a corporate role. My Organizational Leadership course with Professor Ricard supported my passion and helped me confirm my desire to be a leader in a corporate retail business.

Can you share a favorite work assignment that could help a student understand more about what you do?

In my Customer Experience Management class with Professor Baker, we completed a project focused on interacting with various customers based on their unique social style, specifically, how to flex your style to effectively communicate with them. As a district supervisor, I frequently communicate with associates and customers that often have unique and differing social styles. This class project has given me the ability to understand someone else’s social style, giving me the ability to adapt mine to make the most out of our interaction.

Now that you’re in this position, what aspects have surprised you that you didn’t anticipate before starting?

I did not anticipate that the days in corporate work life move very quickly and that nobody would slow down to check on you. I’ve learned that people would rather you speak up and ask for help rather than stay silent and not fully grasp all materials.

What inspires you about the work you are doing in your industry?

One thing that inspires me about the work I am doing in my industry is that I am helping combat retail crime and retail theft which has quickly grown to become a major issue throughout our country. I enjoy protecting the merchandise to give the honest shopper the best experience.

What are some daily challenges you experience in your role?

In my role as a young supervisor coming right out of college, a daily challenge I experience is regarding my age. Some people in my organization question my inexperience to the organization and often have uncertainty in my decisions. My direct supervisor keeps reminding me I am in my position for a reason. I am directed to keep moving forward to continue to prove those who doubt me wrong.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently while a student at Isenberg?

I wish I took more initiative in joining clubs or organizations through Isenberg. I would have loved to be more involved with the school.

Networking is extremely important but can be intimidating to undergraduates. What tips do you have for getting started engaging with alum or upperclassmen?

Nobody is ever going to be a stranger, especially if you both are Isenberg students. Always reach out if you have a question. Thankfully we all go to a school where helping one another is highly supported and expected. You are never a bother to an alumni or upperclassman if you have a question!
