Did you have any initial career goals when you entered Isenberg? Were there any key moments or influences (a guest speaker, course, or extracurricular) during your time at Isenberg that changed or confirmed your career goals?

When entering Isenberg as an OIM major, I intended to pursue a career in manufacturing or efficiency-focused roles. One of my favorite classes at UMass was with Shirley Shmerling, who reaffirmed my interest in operations and the skills necessary for success in the industry. Several OIM instructors were influential in building my confidence and skills, which I now apply in my current role.

Can you share a favorite work assignment that could help a student understand more about what you do?

My favorite work assignment at Northwell has been building our Prostate Cancer Program. I started this clinical program out of pure interest and a desire to assist patients during a challenging time. Developing clinical programs involves knowledge in healthcare operations, data analytics, physician relationships, and project management—skills I have developed over seven years at Northwell.

Now that you’re in this position, what aspects have surprised you that you didn’t anticipate before starting?

In my current position, I was surprised by the range of skills necessary for success. Beyond technical skills, I needed to develop soft skills to work effectively with diverse individuals at various levels. These soft skills, which I have developed over time, have become essential to my success.

What inspires you about the work you are doing in your industry?

I am inspired daily by the knowledge that my work directly impacts patient care. I oversee all patients in my program and take pride in knowing that the quality of care provided enhances both clinical outcomes and personal experiences during a stressful time.

What are some daily challenges you experience in your role?

One of the daily challenges I face is implementing new changes within a large health system. Change management is crucial, as it often presents barriers to improvements and innovation. My role involves presenting and motivating our teams to embrace changes in their daily work, making change management a key aspect of my responsibilities.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently while a student at Isenberg?

As a student at Isenberg, I wish I had been more engaged with the OIM major. The major has evolved, and many new opportunities are now available to students, some of which were not present during my time. However, I found the Isenberg administrative office to be a valuable resource, always providing helpful support.

Networking is extremely important but can be intimidating to undergraduates. What tips do you have for getting started engaging with alum or upperclassmen?

Networking has been a game-changer in my career. While it can be intimidating, it’s essential to remember that there are no bad questions. The person you are speaking with may not recall every detail of the conversation but will remember how you made them feel and what you asked of them. Leaving a positive impression by being yourself can significantly contribute to your success.
